Here’s what to look out for to get the best out of coconut water, fresh or packaged.

FRESH COCONUTS:

Always remember that the younger coconuts contain the most nutrients and tastes better with a gel-like flesh.

Pictured below is a coconut street-cart from Thailand. They have the best, sweetest Coconut water ever and we especially go nuts for the roasted coconut water. The coconuts are roasted, producing a slight burnt taste to the water. Trust us, if you find it, it will change the way we taste coconut water!

TIPS:

Try adding a splash of lime with the fresh coconut water. It gives the zest and uplifts the flavour! Or, if you’re able to find screw pine leaves / Pandan leaves, the flavours just work together like magic. Add the screwpine leaves in the fresh coconut and leave it there for just a while. Remember, once opened, coconut water won’t last for long.

Look out for places selling pure coconut ice-cream, using only coconut milk and the flesh, or go for a coconut shake! Resistance is futile.

PACKAGED COCONUT WATER

So, what do you do when you’re not yet on a tropical paradise? There are so many options available these days for packaged coconut water. Tried and tested, these packaged coconut water don’t have that same fresh taste for obvious reasons but they do come close. We won’t be showing any pictures as they are too many on the market and some are not available in certain markets so we will let you decide what’s best for your tastebuds!

TIPS:

Do take in mind that most of these packaged drinks come with a high sugar content. Always look out for the labels and ensure that its made with just pure coconut water.

Always check out the Asian grocery stores as they stock the best ones at a cheaper price and you might even get a discount if you buy in bulk – like we do!

Now, before you decide to drink a gallon a day, please be aware that coconut water also has laxative properties. Drink in moderation.

Enjoy!
